This natural fibre is made from the stem of the banana tree and is incredibly durable. In addition to being naturally water resistant, banana fibre is also very fire-resistant, tear-resistant and recyclable. We source the banana bark from the fields around Kabini, Karnataka. The handwoven kora used for lining of the bags is sourced from Charaka women weavers society.
Kaiyare was created by Anvitha and Nikitha who came together with ideas and a passion to work in the sustainability space. It has been a project which started in 2019 to be artisanal centric. The objective has been to employ and upskill women around the villages of Kabini, to allow them to be financially independent, while also using various agricultural waste and employing different craft techniques to make products with intent and care. They began their partnership with banana fibre craft and the products made by these women working out of Kabini, Karnataka, simply speak for themselves. From the process of making the rope to doing the crochet and finishing the product, every step is made by hand and with no electricity or machinery. The excitement and pride they take in their achievements show up in every twist and knot.
